Let’s say that the goal is vulnerability, the living of a free and undefended life. This is simply not possible if we’re full of fear. Freedom begins with the recognition that there are no degrees of fear. Fear of anything is fear of everything.
We don’t need to be sitting zazen to practice breath awareness. Buddhist practitioner Will Johnson does it crossing the street. In this shimmering circumstance, “Be as tall as you can be but as relaxed as you can be.”
On the understanding that no generalization is worth a damn, men looking for counselling are generally utilitarian. If it works, it’s truth; if it doesn’t work, fix it. But the truth cannot be fixed and creation is vastly more beautiful than it is useful.
Gratitude is not gratitude for this or that. Gratitude is gratitude for everything.
Only in a culture that fetishizes the body can a man be described as black or white.
