When we enter the deep-sleep state, we relinquish all our worldly attachments. Upon awakening, there’s a feeling of refreshment. This is the “living water” Jesus spoke about during his conversation with the woman at the well. She was attached to five husbands. And she was wide awake.
We’re awake when the commonplace is suddenly elevated and we see beauty everywhere, in everything.
The majority of men who come for counselling aren’t ready to be counselled.
By striking contrast, the exceptional few, rudely awakened to what they don’t know.
The most difficult to work with? Intellectuals.
Awake, aware, but not thinking. Surely this is not an achievement. We can decline to think. We can say, ‘No, I refuse to think.’ This is meditation. Or, in two words, simple sanity.
