All that matters happens in the background. But we don’t get that. We’re matter mad. Image freaks. Movie goers. Background is experienced in the space between objects. Between words and thoughts and prayers.
Because it is a background virtue, humility (derived from the Latin for ‘low’) is best described in terms of what it isn’t. It isn’t ambitious, holds no opinions, declines to judge, has no enemies, does nothing unnecessarily, is unconcerned with image, doesn’t need notes.
We are fascinated by our bodies but of “The force that through the green fuse drives the flower” we are mostly incurious.
The world is complex and noisy. The true man is simple and quiet.
We are mostly aware of what changes and mostly unaware of what doesn’t.
