Notes on the art of being human

The art of being human is not to strive, not to make an effort. “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin.”

One instruction exceeds in importance all the others: Be quiet. Do not try to be quiet. Just be quiet.

Taoism gives us wu wei, action-less activity. We watch a high-circling bird and wonder what it’s doing. Maybe it’s not doing anything. Maybe it’s just flying.
