Our thoughts and feelings are completely unbidden. We don’t say, ‘Now I’m going to worry for 20 minutes,’ and then do just that. Our thoughts and feelings cannot be controlled. They happen to us. And then something untoward occurs. We get attached to them.
If a counsellor has a goal, then it is likely this—to save his client some time. Buffaloes charge straight into stormy weather. Their experience of wind and rain is briefer that way.
The ungoverned mind churns, roils, bubbles and pops like the over-heated contents of a cannibal’s cauldron.
We feel the way we want to feel. Even pain has its attractions.
