Because it is a background virtue, humility (derived from the Latin for ‘low’) is best described in terms of what it isn’t. It isn’t ambitious, holds no opinions, declines to judge, has no enemies, does nothing unnecessarily, is unconcerned with image, doesn’t need notes.
There is talk about good self-concepts and bad self-concepts. This is a distinction without a difference. We are not concepts.
Am I angry? The world I live in will justify my anger. Fully and completely. I have created this world; it’s an unambiguous reflection of me. Nevertheless, there I stand, berating my face.
The more ideas a man has about himself, the more ensheathed he is.
