Here’s a question I never thought I’d ask: What is the spiritual significance of the Old Testament detail that Noah built the ark in his own backyard? Well, two things. First, if you are doing what you are supposed to be doing, you’ll need no help doing it. To underline that point, Noah was 500 years old when he set to work. On top of that, the entire neighbourhood thought he was nuts. Second, if you’re all about saving the world, you don’t need to go anywhere. Bloom where you’re planted.

Man as disciple

Discipline has nothing to do with subjugation, suppression or standing at attention. It does not mean replacing one pattern of behaviour with another. It means “to learn.”

We must be completely free in order to learn. Freedom begins with the realization of how trapped we are.

The least free are the most conventional.
