Beyond our limits

We stand now as we did yesterday and will tomorrow at the limits of human knowledge. And suddenly we hear this: “My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways.”

What he wants

The ambitions of a man who knows exactly what he wants are perforce low and limited.

Bound up

The personality is a braid of conditioned behaviours and memories. It’s why we think, speak and act the same way every day. We assume this triple-named bit of binding is who we are.

Never born, never died

As the dweller is not the dwelling, the soul is not the body. One is time-bound and limited; the other is timeless and free.

Man as actor

The ego is who I think I am. It is a limited, temporary and entirely mind-based sense of self. So men say: “I am a millwright.” Or, “I am a stay-at-home dad.” But we are not the roles we play. Marlon Brando did not tell people he was a mafia don. On examination, we find that the question “Who am I?” can only be answered in the negative, e.g., not this, not that. We concede one all-purpose exception to a blinking list of negative statements: “I am an actor.”
