What can we make of the fact that fungi have 36,000 sexes? Well, it is at least an invitation to think more expansively about sexual identity. Sexual interest peaks in our 20s so the young have something to teach us about gender fluidity.
Men are taught how to fix things. What they’re not taught is how to be a space for what happens. How to allow. How not to resist. “Male and female he created them, and called their name Adam, in the day they were created.”
We are not male or female in different bodies. We are male and female in the same body. “He who knows the male / And yet keeps to the female / Becomes like the space containing the world.”
Misogynist? A man at war with himself.
As humanity evolves, two things happen: On the inside, our obsession with time (past and future) begins to break up; on the outside, our differences become less distinct. Eventually, there will be no borders and we’ll all be chocolate-coloured. “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for we are all one.” No male, no female. No past, no future. We have barely begun to grasp what this means.
