The primary impediment to falling madly in love with ourselves is the smallness of our thoughts.
What we call ‘ego’ is a mind addicted to thinking. Does it need to be said that thinking about this addiction can only feed the addiction? A higher faculty than thought is required.
A mind that is always active inevitably coarsens and decays, as anything does that’s used incessantly. For life to unfold in a loving and spontaneous way, one thing is essential: a quiet mind.
Here’s something I’ve never heard a man say: “I feel like I need to think more.” Men know the lure of less. They’re generally aware that much of what goes on upstairs is nuttier than a squirrel’s diaper.
Here’s a question: What was the most important thought you had yesterday?
If you can’t answer that question, don’t worry. Nobody can.
