The inner journey begins with a feeling of sharp remorse. Richard Rohr calls this the ‘Oh, shit!’ moment. It happens when we’re eyeball-to-eyeball with our primary fault.
There is the Self—serene, untroubled, wise. And then there is the pseudo-self—insecure, insufficient, resentful, confused. Counselling to facilitate the repair and maintenance of the pseudo-self is really a game of Whack-A-Mole.
The ego thrives on conflict, courts and creates it, so that conflict becomes life’s chief feature, an unconscious, tumorous incessancy. Hands up, then, all who endure egomania.
