After Disneyland, what?
Men speak often of pleasure, seldom of joy. Pleasure is somewhere and something; joy is nowhere and nothing. Pleasure is planned, imagined, curated; joy is spontaneous, uncontrolled and now. Something else: Pleasure has an end. That’s where pain is.
New and now
Knowledge is artifactual, stored up, mnemonic. Knowing is immediate, unpremeditated and explosive. The most difficult clients to work with are intellectuals.
Perfection!
We behave perfectly when we act spontaneously. Even in our judicial courts, where spontaneity wears a wig, allowances are made when gathered evidence suggests an absence of premeditation.
On ignorance
The word ‘ignorance’ comes from the Latin for not knowing. We think we’re wise when we know, stupid when we don’t. But the reverse is true. True knowing is spontaneous, not stored up.
