When something meaningful and perhaps even revelatory happens without any apparent cause, we call that a coincidence. Afterward, we’ll say it came “out of the blue,” meaning out of the depths. For every coincidence we recognize, there are a million we don’t. Everything belongs.
A spontaneous act is unexpected, unpredicted, unrehearsed, ungoverned, simple, direct, immediate, natural and now. The more we think, remember and plan, the less spontaneous we are. Jesus was making a point about spontaneity when he said we were to become again as little children.
Things happen unexpectedly. We often call these things accidents. But there are no accidents. If something happened, it had to happen. Things happen for numberless reasons. They happen because the universe happened.
We read in the Gospel of Matthew that the crowds he addressed were left astonished and overwhelmed. And the reason for this mass startlement? The unexpected is true.
