Only the unexpected is true. We embody the holy real when we’re astonished.
If something happens unexpectedly, if something arrives unbidden, if I’m surprised, put onto my left foot, then the Divine has tapped me on the shoulder.
What I strive for, make an effort to acquire or achieve—that’s not it.
That which is most true and real appears on our doorstep uninvited.
If it is unexpected and unpredicted, it is real; it is true. When we are taken by surprise, when we are seized and ravished by the experience of being stood upside down, the mind stops. In that moment, what “sleeps in our paper flesh like dynamite” explodes, and we are conscious of not knowing anything.
Only the unexpected is true. Everything else is mental, a memory or a habit.
Slay your desires. Accept what comes.
